Health for All – Health for Refugee Children Seminar and Care Package Night
GlobalHOME and Sydney University Paediatric Society co-hosted the Health for Refugee Children Seminar and Care Package event. We heard from Consultant Pediatrician Professor David Isaacs about refugee health issues and the role of advocacy.
In addition to enriching our minds and expanding our perspectives, we made 38 packages of toys, winter clothes, books and other goodies, generously donated by Kmart, Broadway Happydays Broadway Arcade, Better Read Than Dead Bookshop, Catchy Crafts, North Shore Art Supplies, Price Attack, To’s Newsagency, and Scholani Education College.
Half of the packages were delivered to the children in Sydney Immigration Residential Housing, Villawood. The remainder of the care packages were given to children participating in the Australia Refugee Volunteers (ARV) program. ARV is the largest organisation to support refugees living in the Australian community. They run fortnightly kids programs, and invited us to join in and teach a lesson on healthy living and healthy eating. It was a successful event and we will be partnering with ARV to hold more healthy living activities for the kids in the future. Find out more about ARV here.
